Spooky Black Magic Halloween Margarita

halloween margarita recipe - featured image

A stunning black margarita that looks like liquid midnight but tastes like a bright, citrusy party. This easy Halloween cocktail uses activated charcoal for its dramatic color without sacrificing flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces blanco tequila (Espolòn or Casamigos recommended)
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec)
  • ½ ounce simple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon activated charcoal powder (food-grade)
  • Ice cubes (for shaking and serving)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt (for rim)
  • ¼ teaspoon activated charcoal powder (for rim)
  • Lime wedge (for rimming the glass)
  • Lime wheel or wedge (for garnish)
  • Edible glitter or star anise (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the black salt rim (optional): In a small dish, combine the coarse sea salt and ¼ teaspoon activated charcoal powder. Mix well with a fork until the salt is evenly black. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip it into the black salt mixture, turning to coat evenly. Set the glass aside.
  2. Mix the charcoal with simple syrup: In a small bowl or directly in your jigger, combine the ½ teaspoon activated charcoal powder with the ½ ounce simple syrup. Whisk or stir until the charcoal is fully dissolved and you have a smooth, black liquid.
  3. Combine the liquid ingredients: Fill your cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add the 2 ounces blanco tequila, 1 ounce fresh lime juice, 1 ounce orange liqueur, and the charcoal-simple syrup mixture.
  4. Shake vigorously: Secure the lid on your shaker and shake hard for about 15-20 seconds until the shaker feels frosty cold.
  5. Strain into the prepared glass: Fill your rimmed glass with fresh ice cubes (or leave it without ice for a ‘straight up’ margarita). Strain the margarita into the glass. For extra-smooth texture, pour through a fine-mesh strainer.
  6. Garnish and serve immediately: Add a lime wheel to the rim of the glass. For extra spooky touch, sprinkle a tiny pinch of edible glitter over the top or float a star anise on the surface. Serve right away while ice cold.

Notes

Don’t skip dissolving the charcoal in simple syrup first to avoid gritty bits. Use food-grade activated charcoal only. The drink is best served immediately as charcoal can settle after 20-30 minutes. For a crowd, mix ingredients in a pitcher (minus ice) and stir before serving.
