These star-shaped Caprese skewers are a fresh, festive, and easy appetizer perfect for summer parties and Fourth of July celebrations. Featuring fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze, they combine classic flavors with a fun patriotic twist.

Ingredients

  • Fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini or ciliegine) or a larger ball sliced into star shapes
  • Ripe cherry or grape tomatoes, sliced and cut into stars
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Balsamic glaze
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Wooden skewers or toothpicks (about 6 inches long)
  • Optional: red bell pepper stars or mini watermelon balls for extra color and sweetness

Instructions

  1. Drain any excess liquid from fresh mozzarella balls. Using a star-shaped cookie cutter, gently press into the mozzarella to cut out stars. Slice cherry tomatoes in half, then use the cutter to create tomato stars.
  2. Rinse fresh basil leaves and pat dry. Toss lightly with a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of sea salt.
  3. Thread one star-shaped mozzarella piece onto the skewer, followed by a folded basil leaf, then a tomato star. Repeat if skewers are long or keep to three pieces for bite-size.
  4. Arrange skewers on a serving platter. Drizzle balsamic glaze over the top using a spoon or squeeze bottle. Sprinkle freshly ground black pepper and add a few drops of olive oil.
  5. Chill the skewers in the fridge for 10 minutes before serving to let flavors meld and keep fresh.

Notes

If mozzarella is too soft, freeze cut pieces for 5 minutes to firm up before assembling. Wipe cookie cutter clean between cuts to avoid sticking. Assemble close to serving time for freshness. Add balsamic glaze just before serving to prevent sogginess. Optional grilling for 1-2 minutes per side adds a smoky flavor and melts cheese slightly.
