A customizable and fun hot dog bar setup perfect for parties and casual meals, featuring a variety of bold toppings and simple prep.

Ingredients

  • Classic beef or pork hot dogs (e.g., Nathan’s Famous)
  • Chicken or turkey hot dogs (optional, for lighter options)
  • Hot dog buns (brioche or standard white buns)
  • Yellow mustard
  • Spicy brown mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Mayonnaise or aioli
  • Caramelized onions
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Chopped dill pickles
  • Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Coleslaw (with light vinaigrette dressing)
  • Fresh chopped chives or green onions
  • Bacon bits (optional)
  • Relish (sweet or dill)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Toppings (15-20 minutes): Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat, add thinly sliced onions, and cook slowly, stirring occasionally until golden and sweet (about 15 minutes). Meanwhile, chop pickled jalapeños, dill pickles, and chives. Shred cheddar cheese and toss coleslaw in a light dressing.
  2. Cook Hot Dogs (10-15 minutes): Preheat grill or pan over medium-high heat. Place hot dogs on the grill and cook for 8-10 minutes, turning every couple of minutes until evenly browned and sizzling. If using a pan, add a splash of water and cover for a few minutes to keep them juicy.
  3. Warm Buns (5 minutes): Wrap buns in foil and place near the grill or in a warm oven (350°F / 175°C) for 5 minutes to soften.
  4. Set Up the Hot Dog Bar: Arrange all toppings in separate bowls or small plates. Place hot dogs and buns on platters. Provide utensils like tongs and spoons for easy serving.
  5. Assemble and Serve: Let everyone build their own hot dog with desired toppings. Encourage mixing flavors and keep napkins handy.

Notes

Caramelize onions a day ahead for better flavor and convenience. Avoid overcrowding the grill to ensure even cooking. Use tongs instead of forks to keep hot dogs juicy. Warm buns help toppings stick and improve texture. Prepare toppings in advance and keep refrigerated until serving.
