A quick and simple hummus recipe that blends pantry staples into a creamy, flavorful dip perfect for snacks, lunches, or gatherings. No soaking or complicated steps required.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons tahini (optional; use sesame-free sunflower seed butter if allergic)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about half a lemon)
  • 1 to 2 garlic cloves, minced or grated
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
  • Salt to taste (start with 1/2 teaspoon)
  • Optional toppings: olive oil drizzle, smoked paprika, chopped parsley, toasted pine nuts

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the canned chickpeas under cold water to remove excess salt and canning liquid (about 2 minutes). Optionally, remove skins by pinching each chickpea for extra smoothness.
  2. Add chickpeas, tahini (if using), lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and salt to a blender or food processor. Pulse a few times to start breaking down the chickpeas (about 30 seconds). Add 1 tablespoon cold water if mixture looks dry.
  3. Blend continuously for 1 to 2 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides at least once. The hummus should be creamy and slightly thick.
  4. Add olive oil and blend again for 20-30 seconds to incorporate richness.
  5. Adjust consistency by adding water, one tablespoon at a time, blending after each addition until desired creaminess is reached. Taste and adjust salt, lemon juice, or garlic as needed.
  6. Transfer hummus to a serving bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with smoked paprika, chopped parsley, or toasted pine nuts if desired.
  7. Serve immediately or refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld. Stir in a splash of water before serving if thickened.

Notes

For extra smooth hummus, remove chickpea skins before blending. Adjust garlic and lemon juice to taste. If blender struggles, soak chickpeas in warm water for 10 minutes before blending. Roasting garlic mellows its flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 5 days or freeze up to 3 months.
