A foolproof recipe for crispy, buttery garlic bread that comes together in just 5 easy steps. Perfect as a snack or side dish with a crunchy exterior and soft, flavorful center.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf Italian or French bread (about 12 inches/30 cm), preferably day-old
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large garlic cloves, finely minced or pressed
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional)
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup (25 g) grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice the bread diagonally into 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick pieces.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Stir until smooth and well blended.
  4. Spread the garlic butter generously on each bread slice’s cut side. Optionally, sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan on top of each slice.
  5. Arrange the slices buttered side up on a baking sheet in a single layer without overlapping.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, checking around 10 minutes to ensure golden edges without burning. The centers should remain soft and buttery.
  7. Optional: For extra crispiness, broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.

Notes

Use softened butter for easy spreading and fresh garlic for best flavor. For extra crispiness, broil the bread for 1-2 minutes at the end. Toast fresh bread slices for 3-4 minutes before applying butter to prevent sogginess. Garlic butter can be prepared up to 3 days ahead and stored in the fridge.
