A quick and easy recipe for crispy fried green tomatoes made in the air fryer, served with a tangy buttermilk ranch dip. Perfect for a guilt-free, crunchy snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium green tomatoes, firm and unripe
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp salt, plus more for seasoning
  • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • Cooking spray
  • For the Buttermilk Ranch Dip:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into ½-inch thick slices and pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  2. Prepare two bowls: In the first, mix flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. In the second, beat eggs with buttermilk until smooth.
  3. Dip each tomato slice first into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then into the egg and buttermilk mixture, and again into the flour mixture. Press lightly to adhere coating. Place coated slices on a wire rack or plate.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  5. Lightly spray each coated tomato slice with cooking spray and arrange in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
  6. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. While tomatoes cook, whisk together mayonnaise, buttermilk, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice, salt, and pepper for the ranch dip. Chill until serving.
  8. Serve the crispy fried green tomatoes hot with the buttermilk ranch dip.

Notes

Pat tomatoes dry to ensure crispiness. Use double coating (flour-egg-flour) for a sturdy crust. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to prevent sogginess. Flip halfway through cooking for even crisping. Cooking spray helps achieve golden color without oil. The ranch dip can be made ahead to deepen flavors. For gluten-free, substitute flours accordingly. Vegan adaptations possible with flax eggs and plant-based milk/mayo.
