Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 cups) – a mix of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith recommended
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Let sit for about 5 minutes to macerate.
  3. Pour the salted caramel sauce over the apple mixture and toss again gently. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer. Dot the top with the small pieces of butter.
  4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse meal with some pea-sized butter pieces remaining.
  5. Sprinkle the oat crumble evenly over the apple filling. Do not press it down.
  6. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling around the edges and the topping is golden brown and firm to the touch. If the top is browning too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil for the remaining time.
  7. Let the crisp cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before serving.
  8. Spoon into bowls, top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, and sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired.

Notes

For best results, use a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith. Don’t skip the maceration step as it helps create a thick filling. Keep the butter cold for the crumble to ensure a crunchy topping. Let the crisp rest for 15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
