A quick and easy holiday home fragrance recipe using fresh cranberries, citrus, and warm spices to fill your home with a nostalgic, comforting scent.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 cups water
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen whole cranberries
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 2 large oranges, sliced thinly
  • 1 medium lemon, sliced thinly
  • 1 small lime, sliced thinly (optional)
  • 3 to 4 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruit thoroughly under cold water. Slice oranges, lemons, and limes into thin rounds, removing large seeds.
  2. Place a large stockpot on the stove. Add fresh cranberries, dried cranberries, and sliced fruit.
  3. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise to the pot. Drizzle vanilla extract over everything.
  4. Pour in 8 cups of water, ensuring the fruit is mostly submerged. Stir gently to distribute spices.
  5. Turn heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle boil, then immediately reduce heat to low. Look for small bubbles, not a rolling boil.
  6. Simmer on the lowest setting for at least 30 minutes. Check water level every 30-45 minutes and add hot water as needed to prevent burning.
  7. Stir occasionally to prevent fruit from sticking to the bottom. The pot can last 2-3 days with regular water top-ups.
  8. If the scent fades, add a fresh slice of orange or a splash of vanilla.

Notes

Use filtered water if possible to avoid clashing odors. Keep the lid slightly askew to allow scent to escape while retaining moisture. Do not leave unattended overnight on the stove. If using dried cranberries, check labels for animal-derived sugars if strict vegan.
