A simple, homemade peppermint syrup made with real candy cane flavor, perfect for adding a festive touch to coffee, hot chocolate, or milkshakes during the holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons pure peppermint extract
  • 4 to 6 crushed candy canes (optional)
  • 1–2 drops red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar (plus 1/4 cup brown sugar if using) into a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved and the liquid looks clear (about 3-5 minutes). Do not let it boil yet.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low to maintain a simmer. Avoid a rolling boil to prevent crystallization.
  4. Simmer for 5 minutes to thicken slightly (or 3 minutes for a thinner syrup).
  5. Remove the pan from the heat.
  6. Stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons of pure peppermint extract and optional red food coloring. Taste and adjust mint strength if desired.
  7. Let the syrup cool completely in the pan.
  8. Pour into an airtight glass jar or bottle for storage.

Notes

Use pure peppermint extract rather than flavoring or oil for the best taste. If the syrup crystallizes, wipe the sides of the pan with a wet brush while simmering. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or freeze in ice cube trays for longer storage. The syrup thickens as it cools.
